This afternoon after working our “day jobs” my husband and I headed to 309 S. Main Street to continue our work that we must get done before the carpenters come to work on installing the dormer and replacing the roof, etc.
We made a lot of progress in the three short hours we worked. Dean worked on cutting the hole for the new stairway from the second floor down to the first floor.
We started with a clean home…….
At the end of our three hours he had the hole cut for the new stair location. I love when a plan comes together and no one gets hurt.
I spent the afternoon removing sheet rock and insulation in the other half of the upstairs. The goal is to have the upstairs gutted to the studs and ready for the carpenters as soon as possible.
My favorite part of the afternoon was finding a picture of Queen Elizabeth tacked inside the roof rafters. I would love to know the story behind the picture.

It’s cool to find stuff hidden away inside walls in old houses you are remodeling. Years ago I found stacks of old color Sunday comics hidden away. They were readable but so brittle with age they fell apart days after we hauled them out.

I’m looking forward to the possibility of finding more old stuff. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

We are having fun with the project. We have been busy helping both of our sons on their homes in the past year and were ready for a project of our own. We hope that our work will improve the look of Main Street in our small town of 400. It was the only house on the block that screams “I need a new look!” We want the new renter or owner to be proud to say “That’s my house!”

Thanks Nancy. When we work on our home or others we try to keep in mind that what we want for ourselves is what we should want to give others as well. We want it to be safe, comfortable and pleasing to the eye.

I like the window that is visible from the upstairs through the cutout for the new stairs. It’s a good day when no one gets hurt.

When we finish I hope that there will be a lot more light in many parts of the house. We are going to shorten up the window because there will be a landing for the new stairs under the window.

You are making great progress – and what a great find with the picture of the Queen; you may be lucky enough to uncover some more treasures!

We did make a lot of progress this afternoon. I found two more pictures in the rafters today. The first was of a guy fly fishing and the second was of a puppy and kitten. They were both out of a magazine from 1959. Fun find but I forgot to take a picture before we came home for the evening.

So nice to see you blogging again, Jeanne. Wow, you are really skilled! We’d have to hire it all out. Good luck with the project!

Thanks Carole. I’m just trying to figure out how I could quit my day job. I like this kind of work so much more.

I think finding the Queen is a good omen – just think of all the pictures that might have been there!
